The Rules:
1. Pick a character, pairing, or fandom you like.
2. Turn on your music player and put it on random/shuffle.
3. Write a drabble/ficlet related to each song that plays. You only have the time frame of the song to finish the drabble; you start when the song starts, and stop when it's over. No lingering afterwards!
4. Do ten of these, then post them.
Character: Bones (Although they ended up being Bones/Jim)
Rating: Teen (language and implied sex)
1. Me and My Shadow – Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr
McCoy can’t figure out how he ended up with Jim in his life. Coincidence sat them next to each other on the shuttle, and that should have been the end of it. Neither of them was making much of a first impression, between the days old stubble or the bruises from yet another bar fight.
He had thought that would be the end of it, until Jim kept turning up, dragging him here and there. First becoming his drinking buddy, then somehow managing to worm his way into every other aspect of McCoy’s life, until he couldn’t remember what he had done without him.
2. I Wanna Be Your Dog – The Stooges
Sometimes he felt like he was being taken advantage of. Whenever Jim wanted him to treat yet another injury without reporting it, whenever Jim drug him out and ditched him for the first warm willing body that came along, whenever he got caught in the wake of Jim’s rebellion.
He never stopped though, always fixed Jim up, always watched his back, always helped him out. Sometimes he wondered if he liked being used.
3. Shakespeare’s Sister – The Smiths
Jim needed to stop trying to pick up people who weren’t alone. Bones wasn’t willing to throw himself into the fray when yet another angry partner decided to try to wipe the smug off of Jim’s face.
No matter how many times he told himself that this time he wasn’t getting involved, he still found himself wading in, fists flying, trying to save Jim’s neck yet again.
4. Sunshine – Keane
McCoy catalogued the new set of injuries, broken bones, bruises, knuckles scraped raw. He hated this, hated it every time. He wanted to tell Jim to stop fighting, but Jim never listened. He wanted to beg Jim to take care of himself, but his words would be met with a grin, a slap on the shoulder, and empty assurances.
He wanted to protect Jim, but all he could do was fix the injuries, patch together the pieces as best he could, and wait for the next time.
5. I Need You – Eurythmics
It was a few months after they arrived at Starfleet that Jim showed up at his door, drunk, swaying slightly and smelling like smoke and sex.
He leaned in, his hot, booze soaked breath ghosting across McCoy’s cheek, before stumbling forward. McCoy caught him, holding him up as Jim babbled quietly into his neck, mouthing words into his skin.
6. Black Metallic – Catherine Wheel
Jim’s smiles never quite reached his eyes, always bright, happy and insincere whenever he chose his conquest for the evening.
McCoy watched him, skin dark in the low light, watched him flirt, press, touch, always fast, looking for something fleeting and warm.
Some nights, when he poured Jim into his bed, he wondered what he was doing, trying to keep something so fragile together, when he was broken enough already.
When he crawled into bed next to his passed out friend, felt Jim moving closer, unconsciously seeking warmth and companionship even in his sleep, he knew this would only end up hurting them both in the end.
7. Georgia On My Mind – Billie Holiday
He was homesick most of the time. No matter how much he focused on work, on Starfleet, on Jim, he still wished he was back home.
He wanted his little practice, patching up broken arms from falling out of trees, knowing everyone he treated, being greeted with familiar voices calling him “Doc” when he went out.
He couldn’t go back, not anymore, but he still thought about it, late at night. He wished he could go home.
8. Like a Friend – Pulp
Jim kissed him, wet, sloppy and drunk, but Bones couldn’t stop him. He knew that this was a bad idea, knew that this wasn’t even what he wanted, but it was all he was going to get.
He was lonely. He was sick of watching from the sidelines, waiting for Jim to need him.
He let Jim strip him, clumsy fingers fumbling, everything hurried, rough. He held Jim close, tried to forget that they were using each other, tried to pretend this was anything other than what it was.
9. Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad – Moby
Jim was gone in the morning, nothing left behind but the faint smell of him on the sheets. McCoy tried not to feel hurt. It wasn’t exactly a surprise. He expected this. He knew better.
He still had time before his classes. He could go back to sleep, get some more rest before he had to start the day, but suddenly Jim’s smell lingering made his stomach turn.
He got up, stripped the sheets, threw them in with the laundry, wished he could just burn them, destroy the evidence, pretend last night had never happened.
He spent longer in the shower than was necessary, waiting for it to wash the memory away.
10. Lover You Should’ve Come Over – Jeff Buckley
He still thinks about it sometimes, years later, after the Narada. It’s raining when they get back, skies grey, the world colorless and cold, mourning.
He looks out the window at the empty campus and thinks that he should have done things differently back then, not let it be forgotten, brushed over and ignored like it never happened. Maybe if he hadn’t backed off, he wouldn’t be alone now. Maybe Jim would be with him, maybe they would have each other, maybe he’d be something other than Jim’s ever present shadow, trailing behind, trying to repair the damage left in his wake.
He’s surprised when Jim shows up, dripping from the rain, skin icy. McCoy goes through the motions, calls him an idiot as he strips Jim out of his soggy uniform. Jim pulls him close, pulls him into bed, curls around him, searching for something McCoy isn’t sure he can give him any more.
Even as McCoy wraps himself around his friend, gives him what he needs, he knows that this is all it will ever be. He’ll take what he can get.

Pay no attention to those twitching red bits on the floor. That's just my broken heart!
These were amazing. I think I might do this meme myself. Sadly, my music collection isn't as awesome, though. Curse you.
Into memories. And please make a sequel to this where Bones mans up and Jim stops being a dick? Please? I'll be your bestest friend?

While I might write Kirk/McCoy again, I don't think this one will ever get a sequel. I'd probably only break your heart more with even more angst.
Thanks for the comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed the story.
